In the last 5 years or so, La Puerta Originals’ production has really grown in the area of solid wood custom kitchen cabinetry. Of course I love the doors LPO produces and am continually astounded at the variety that comes out of the shop (I mean, wouldn’t you think after almost 20 years in business and the almost ten years that I have been working here, that things would get kind of repetitive? But that is the very nature of LPO – that the use of antique materials makes every door unique), I find the custom kitchens to be really exciting. I cook a lot and often as I am cooking, I think about kitchen remodeling that I would do. The customization available is amazing!
As I lugged my heavy Cuisinart out of the pantry cabinet this weekend, I was thinking about the appliance platform for mixers and food processors that pulls out of a lower kitchen cabinet. This means you never have to heft it, and it stows away behind the kitchen cabinet door so it doesn’t clutter the countertop.
I think I would use my food processor more if I could just raise a lever to use it, and I wouldn’t have my mixer taking up countertop space. Or, as I am gathering the leavings of my vegetable chopping, I think about the kitchen islands we have done that have a hidden garbage and/or compost bin sunk below the countertop. How fab to be able to just sweep the cuttings into the removable bucket! I think I would have two in my kitchen island cabinet – one for the vegetables and one for the junk mail and other stuff that seems to accumulate on the island.
And in the summer I would love to have the silverware tray that just pops out of the utensil drawer. You just grab it and take it to the table on the portal.
We have done a lot of pull-out pantry kitchen cabinets. Some have been big, like 10” wide and to the ceiling and others have been mini pantry cabinets.
You could get really specialized, having them tucked all over the kitchen. Baking spices and supplies near the mixer, cooking oils and herbs & spices near the cooktop, etc.
I think I would do a small pull-out kitchen cabinet on the end of our kitchen island that had a stash of rags and cleaning supplies – save a trip to the garage and the linen closet! Ooh! And a cabinet with an electrical outlet in it for the mini-vac! And the great thing is that you can have it built to the exact size, so there is no wasted space.
I would have to have some regular kitchen cabinets for mugs and other things, but my kitchen would be all about drawers. Although I love the idea of wooden panels on the refrigerator (we did one recently, shown right, that mimics an old ice box – with the brass pull-out handles), I think I would do away with the refrigerator and have multiple refrigerator and freezer drawers. I am so tired of having to pull things out to get at what is in the back, searching for things that get hidden and go bad.
I would have a big drawer for the salad stuff (see photo of double stack of crisper drawers at left), smaller drawers for condiments, deep, but narrow drawer for juice and milk. Same thing for the pots and pans. Shallow drawers for frying pans, deeper for saucepans. And I love the drawers that have those spring loaded plate holders. I could go on, but I will spare you. As you can tell, I have thought about this a lot. Every time a custom kitchen comes out of the woodshop, I am the first to check it out. And when we do the kitchen cabinet remodel – I will be ready! I will have the most tricked out kitchen in Santa Fe, getting more out of every square inch than a one twice its size!

I love the finish on these kitchen cabinets. The subtle colors and the bronze hardware make them warm, and the carved antique material incorporated into each drawer makes them so unique.
